Thal Ranch is committed to being environmentally and ecologically responsible. We are located in northern New Mexico in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Our property, as you can see from the many photos, is a mixture of rugged hills, lakes, natural springs, sagebrush flats combined with lots of tree cover which is the perfect habitat for elk and for an exciting elk hunt.

We also are unique in that we have a hay field that draws elk from the nearby mountains. Not only do our elk herds enjoy our High Altitude Ranch but you will too!

Our spring is bringing more moisture than normal so we are looking for lots of grass and with our hay fields our herds should be well fed and looking forward to their rut. When those bull elk begin to bugle we are hearing some of the last truly wild sounds left for us to enjoy.

When fall arrives and the trees are in full color we are hoping for a very active Rut.

Our permits for your elk hunt will normally be for 5 days. A guided elk hunt is available to you or you can head out on your own. Whether you choose guided or not, our past harvests have been outstanding. Both rifle and bow have yielded magnificent trophies.

One of the last truly wild sounds heard in the Rocky Mountains today is the spine-tingling bugle of the bull elk. The sound of a big bull elk's bugle in the wild is unlike any other sound. The bugle of a bull elk is a never forgotten sound out here in the Rocky Mountains.

Elk in New Mexico!

We have several elk hunts on our New Mexico ranch during “THE RUT”. By the middle of September “THE RUT” is usually in full swing. Each of our hunting permits usually run for five days.

All of our hunts are conducted on our well managed private land and you will have exclusive hunting rights during your permitted time. Our permits are date specific which limits our hunters and preserves our herds and manages our thinning. Up here in the highlands of the Sangre de Cristos, nature's predators are scarce, so we have the yearly hunts in order to help with the herd management.

Our hay fields are unique in the area. Our herds of elk enjoy our fields and they provide an excellent opportunity for our hunters as well. A healthier, thriving herd means successful hunts and better trophies for our hunters.
